MENANDS, N.Y. – Thousands are expected to turn to online shopping Wednesday for Free Shipping Day.
Free Shipping Day is a one-day, online shopping event when thousands of retailers offer free shipping with guaranteed delivery by Christmas Eve. It began in 2008 by Luke Knowles and his wife, the founders of freeshipping.org.
In 2011, Free Shipping Day generated more than $1 billion in online sales with over 2,600 merchants registered to participate, and the numbers continue to grow. The event has also expanded to include Canada.
Shipping services like FedEx have their hands full this time of year. Workers at the Menands location got right to work at 6 a.m. sorting out packages, and getting ready to ship them out.
And as more consumers are choosing online shopping over the traditional shopping malls, Dan Doherty, the senior manager at the location, says they are committed to get those packages delivered on time.
E-commerce, e-retail has become an increasing part of the dynamic that goes into our volumes. It's a piece of it and it continues to grow," he says.
Free Shipping Day beat Black Friday's online spending two years in a row by over $250 million and became the third-heaviest day for online shopping in U.S. history two years after it was created.
You can find participating retailers here.
