Extra security present at Taconic Hills after online threat

CRARYVILLE, N.Y. – There was a high police presence at Taconic Hills High School Monday after a threat of violence was posted online.

A threat of gun violence was posted on social media last week, and the school district called in extra security as a precaution.

New York State Police and the Columbia County Sheriff's Office were clearly visible at the school throughout the day, and increased security measures were put into place at Monday's basketball game.

Basketball player Joey Collette said, "Main thing I heard was that there were kids that were gonna come and shoot up the school."

The boys' varsity basketball game was rescheduled from 7 p.m. to 4 p.m. and only parents were allowed into the game after presenting an ID to officials.

The school district sent an e-mail to parents Sunday informing them of the threat and the increased patrols at the school. As a result, one-fourth of all students stayed home, and the junior varsity basketball game was cancelled.

"We had a student come down on Friday who said there was a posting that was concerning," Superintendent of Taconic Hills Central School District Dr. Neil Howard said.

Howard said the posting was being investigated by State Police.

"At this point we were unable to substantiate any of the rumors," he said.

But the school did not want to take any chances after the December 13 shooting at Arapahoe High School in Colorado that left one student severely wounded.

"Colorado is still fresh in everyone's minds," Howard continued. "We want to err on the side of safety."

Parents and students said they felt safer with the increased security.

"It's what needed to be done with everything that's going on in society," one parent said.

Howard said security will remain at the school for the near future as the case is being investigated.
