TROY, N.Y. – A Rensselaer County family has turned their personal tragedy into joy for other children.
Tyler McIntyre was only six years old when he died in a car accident in February 2012. Tyler loved Christmas. His favorite part was giving gifts. Now his mother is honoring Tyler's love of generosity.
Tonya McIntyre created Toys From Tyler.
Almost 1,000 toys have been collected from friends, family, co-workers and Tyler's friends from West Sand Lake Elementary and donated in honor of Tyler.
All of the toys collected will be donated to the Concerns-U Center in Rensselaer County. The center is where parents who are less fortunate are able to come and pick out toys for their children.
Tonya said she knew she had to do this after last year's holiday season.
"Last year was my first Christmas without him, and I would go to the store and see things Tyler would like for Christmas and I was a mess," she said. "Now I can put all of that energy into a toy drive. And this year I started this toy drive, and now I can buy for another little boy that also would love it."
McIntyre said this year's toy drive was such a huge success, and she plans to do it every year.
