Owner dies trying to save horses from barn fire

WEST SAND LAKE, N.Y. – The owner of the barn that caught fire Thursday night died while trying to save horses trapped in the structure.

Keith Meissner, 60, was killed in the massive fire that completely destroyed the barn at 214 Thais Rd. Four horses also died in the fire.

Crews responded to a call for a fire around 7:45 p.m. Thursday.

It took multiple crews several hours to battle the blaze. The fire was completely out by early Friday morning.

Fire officials said they believe the fire started in the front of the barn. The Rensselaer County Sheriff's Office said the fire does not look suspicious.
