Skidmore researchers get patent for weight loss antioxidant

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Two Skidmore College researchers have patent for a special use of the antioxidant manganese T-BAP for use in weight loss.

Associate Professor T.H. Reynolds, PhD and his former student, Jonathan Brestoff Parker, were looking into a compound that would help people with type 2 diabetes. The result they found when testing the compound on obese mice, surprised them.

"It did improve insulin action and insulin sensitivity," explained Reynolds. "But even more interesting than that, finding was the fact that these mice lost considerable amounts of weight."

The mice lost an astounding 40-percent of their body weight, and it was mostly fat tissue.

"It was great, there was a few high fives in the lab when we found this observation," said Reynolds.

However, before they can start helping people shed the pounds, there are still some hurdles that lie ahead.

"The next step is that we need to do some toxicology and safety testing to make sure that the compound is safe before you can move forward with clinical trials," continued Reynolds.

Even though human trials could be awhile away, Dr. Reynolds is excited about what this could mean for the future treatment of obesity.

"Obesity is a huge problem in our society so anytime you have a treatment that is effective at preventing or reversing obesity, it's really exciting because it can make a big impact on public health," said Reynolds.
