BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. – A Clifton Park woman has been sentenced to 2 ½ to 7 ½ years in State Prison in connection to causing a fatal crash.
Traci Briskin, 40, was sentenced by a Saratoga County Judge on Monday morning.
In September, a jury found Briskin guilty of Manslaughter in the 2nd Degree for a November 2012 car crash in Charleton that killed 49-year-old Thomas Baker.
According to police, Briskin was impaired by alcohol and driving recklessly on Jockey Street. She crossed the center line twice, weaved, took her eyes off the road to search for a dropped GPS unit and she sped through through a stop sign.
District Attorney James Murphy has maintained that Briskin thought of herself as more of the victim in this case. Police at the scene of the accident said she was heard cursing at Baker as he lay unconscious.
The local husband and father of five lingered for a month in the hospital but died a few days before Christmas.
"She has more than twice said she wishes she could have traded places with the victim," said DA Murphy.
Baker's wife and children did not want to speak on camera with NEWS10 ABC. However, during a victim impact statement his wife said "Tom and I should have grown old together. That had been taken away from me."
The Judge could have sentenced Briskin to the maximum for the Manslaughter charge which is up to 15 years in State Prison.
