Local Menorah lit in celebration of Hanukkah

Posted: Updated:

DELMAR, N.Y. -- An unusual calendar alignment means that the night before Thanksgiving falls on the first night of the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah.

On Wednesday, local Jews celebrated the first night by lighting the menorah. Members of the Bethlehem Chabad in Delmar took part in a menorah lighting ceremony.

The giant menorah is at the Four Corners area.

Hanukkah marks the Jewish victory in 168 B.C. over the Syrians and Greeks who had desecrated the holy temple. There was only supposed to be enough oil for the temple's eternal flame to last a couple of days, but it lasted eight days instead.
