NASSAU, N.Y. -- The environmental protection agency says cleanup options will be studied at a federal superfund site in Rensselaer County.
The agency visited the Dewey Loeffel Landfill near Nassau Tuesday to announce that General Electric and SI Group have agreed to conduct a $1.5 million comprehensive contamination study.
GE will also investigate cleanup options for nearby lakes, ponds and streams potentially contaminated by the landfill.
The site was used for the disposal of hazardous materials until 1968.
The EPA also announced that a water treatment system for collecting and treating liquid seeping from the landfill is expected to be running by January.
