As Fort Plain recovers, businesses slowly reopen

Posted: Updated:

FORT PLAIN, N.Y. -- The waters may have receded, but many in Fort Plain are still rebuilding from flooding this past summer.

But one store, Linda's, is one of the lucky ones able to rebuild and finally reopen with a ribbon cutting Friday.

Linda Scaffidi-Fonti has been in business in Fort Plain for over five years, but this past June the consignment shop which bears her name was no match for devastating flooding that rolled through the Fort Plain area.

"There was just like a foot of mud and the water just literally came through knocked back the back retaining wall that we had, the dressing rooms were all mud and by the end of the day, the place was like a swamp," she said.

With a lot of hard work and about $30,000 in much needed government aid, she was able to rebuild. But it wasn't easy -- or cheap.

"Everything was soggy, so $24,000 is fabric stuff, then the racks and anything wood, anything exposed to dampness and smell had to go, so by the time I got done, probably about $40,000," she said.

Through the 5 month rebuilding process, Tracy Lynch missed the consignment shop terribly. She couldn't wait to get there and do some Christmas shopping.

"Some dolls for my daughter. My 12-year old like's bears, so we gotta get her teddy bears," said Lynch.

"I did really well today. I found some things for myself and my son."

Another shopper was State Senator Cecilia Tkaczyk, who was on hand to not only snag some great deals, but to help cut the stores ceremonial ribbon, symbolizing that Fort Plain is on the mend.

"It's great to see another business back open, they've been through such a horrific event and to see it coming back like this is just stupendous," said Tkaczyk.

In September, the town's only shopping center, Save-A-Lot, reopened.
