BERLIN, N.Y. – The New York State Police are investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred in the Town of Berlin Sunday night.

Officials say State Police became involved after a 911 call reguarding a domestic incident in Berlin. Police say 38-year-old Steven Bell left his home with an armed rifle which he discharged a round from.

Officials say they eventually found his car in Berlin State Forest Park. Police found ammunition in his car, but Bell and the loaded weapon were nowhere to be found. Authorities used DEC night vision goggles to find the suspect and when they did, he was not compliant.

"At that time he disregarded to stop or show his hands. Then he made threatening statements as he continued to approach and motion as if he were bringing a weapon up," said Troop G BCI member Scott Coburn.

As a result, two state troopers fired their weapons. Officials say Bell fell to the ground and received first aid, but died of his injuries. An autopsy report is expected this afternoon.

The shooting took place in the area of Cowdry Hollow Road about a mile outside the town center near Route 22.
