Police: Troy teen arrested after chase, hit-and-run

TROY, N.Y. - A 17-year-old is facing multiple charges after a short police chase followed by a hit-and-run accident in the city Saturday.

The incident began around 12:30 a.m. when Troy Police began to chase Jamier Walker through downtown Troy.

"There was a lot going on during a short period of time, but it boiled down to the vehicle eluding the officers," Troy Police Captain John Cooney said. "It went through the downtown area we believe up to 60 mph."

Police discontinued the pursuit for concerns of civilian and officer safety, but after a short time, police received a call that the vehicle crashed into seven parked cars along the 1400 block of 5th Avenue.

The Griswold Heights teen and several passengers fled from the scene on foot, but the investigation led police to Walker as he was seeking medical treatment at the hospital for injuries police believe he sustained in the crash.

Walker was driving his mother's minivan during the incident, and the car was totaled in the crash.

"The suspect's mom actually disclosed to us that he took the car without her permission," Cooney said. "She went through the legal steps to press charges."

Police said Walker was driving without a license and will face over a dozen charges including Unlawfully fleeing police, Reckless Driving and other various traffic law violations.

"Once the police attempt to stop you, and you drive recklessly at high speeds at a downtown area, you put yourself in a position for reckless endangerment, reckless driving," Cooney continued. "Very serious crimes."

Walker was arraigned in court Sunday morning.
