Troy buildings evacuated after manhole cover pops

Posted:

TROY, N.Y. – Two buildings in Troy were evacuated Thursday morning after a manhole cover popped.

A manhole cover in the North Side alley on Broadway between 4th Street and 5th Avenue popped around 10:51 a.m. resulting in the  Troy Post Office and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Office at Broadway and 4th Avenue being evacuated.

The Troy Fire Department reports there are no injuries. The cause of the incident is believed to be related to an electrical problem interacting with a water main break causing short circuits which developed enough pressure to pop the cover.

Broadway between 4th Street and 5th Avenue were closed earlier in the day, but are now clear and open to traffic.
