Man pleads guilty to credit card scam at Golden Town Buffet


ALBANY, N.Y. – A man accused of stealing credit card information from customers at the Golden Town Buffet on Route 9 has pleaded guilty to charges on Wednesday.

According to District Attorney David Soares, Heng Li, 27, of Brooklyn, pleaded guilty to one Count of Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument in the Second Degree and one Count of Scheme to Defraud in the First Degree, both felonies.

On August 5, Li was arrested following an execution of a search warrant pursuant to an identity theft investigation at the Glenmont restaurant.

Bethlehem Police arrested four people, including Li, who were employees at the Chinese food restaurant, all of whom had outstanding federal warrants for deportation.

Li used a credit card skimmer device to obtain the personal identification on 39 credit card numbers on fraudulent pretenses.  According to Soares, Li also obtained a forged Michigan driver's license. 

There were at least three dozen victims as Bethlehem Police began investigating this incident.  According to authorities, the theft totaled about $50,000.

He is currently in custody and faces up to 2 1/3 to 7 years in State Prison when he is sentenced on December 11, 2013.
The Bethlehem Police are being assisted in this investigation by the Albany Police, Colonie Police, New York State Police New Scotland, New York State Police Clifton Park, East Greenbush Police, US Secret Service and Department of Homeland Security.
