Military moms seek care package donations for troops overseas

COLONIE, N.Y. - As Veterans' Day approaches, community members are showing their appreciation by giving back to men and women who are currently serving overseas.

Volunteers took part in the annual "Holiday Freedom Boxes" at Colonie Center on Saturday.

Valerie Perrotte, a Schodak resident and a military mom  said "I look through the stuff and think about what my son would like so that's what I like to pick out first."

Perrotte has been putting care packages together for the military for three years now.

Although her son is back from serving in the Army, she's out here supporting other Blue Star Mothers packing boxes for men and women serving overseas in Afghanistan.

"We have children who are either currently in the military serving," the mother explained, "or who have been honorably discharged."

The Capital Region NY2 Blue Star Mothers is a support group for the military and for one another and have been putting on this event for six years.

"Our hearts and our minds are with them," explained another military mom, Susan Lake, "they know we are thinking about them and that we are supporting them."

The moms are encouraging the community to show their appreciation for the troops. Volunteers are boxing up the basics like- toothpaste, lip balm and even things like hand and foot warmers. And you can't forget the snacks- like beef jerky, fruit snacks and pop tarts.

"They are in the desert," continued Lake, "They don't have the luxury of hot showers or warm fluffy blankets or pillows. It's difficult for them so we are bringing them a little bit of home.

Once a box is filled, it's taped up and put in a corner waiting to be shipped to Afghanistan just in time for the holidays.

The goal for Saturday was to get 700 boxes packed away.

If you missed the event and you would like to donate, you can find more information here.
