Trial delay as Bruno recovers from cancer surgery

Posted:

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A federal fraud trial for the former leader of New York's Senate, which was scheduled for early December, has been put off until next year so he can continue recovering from cancer surgery.

A federal judge has stayed the deadline for pretrial filings following former Sen. Joseph Bruno's September removal of a cancerous tumor from his kidney.

Prosecutors propose a trial in February, while the defense asks for April.

Bruno, 84, was acquitted in 2009 of five counts and convicted of two others that were overturned on appeal.

Prosecutors have refiled those two charges against the Rensselaer County Republican. They say he accepted more than $400,000 from a businessman for helping with state grants.

Bruno has denied wrongdoing, saying he had an outside consulting business.
