Female candidates celebrate victories across NY

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The city of Albany elected its first female mayor to succeed long term Mayor Jerry Jennings, and there are a number of other female candidates across the state celebrating victory after Election Day.

Tuesday night, voters elected Kathy Sheehan as Albany mayor; she's both the first new mayor in 22 years and the first female mayor in the city.  In Saratoga Springs, four term supervisor Joanne Yepsen was elected mayor with 52 percent of the vote.  Yepsen and Sheehan also join a number of other female mayoral victors in Rochester and Syracuse.

Barbara Bartoletti, director of the NY League of Women Voters, says women have a proven track record of success in New York and obviously voters noticed that.

"Women have now worked up to that tank and of course they are now executives of their cities and the next step now could be perhaps governor's office," she says.
