Rotterdam homeowner, 71, dies after fire rescue

ROTTERDAM, N.Y. – Rotterdam Police say that a 71-year-old man died Thursday night after a fire tore through his home in Rotterdam.

Officials at the scene of the fire at 562 Duanesburg Road in Rotterdam say that John E. Trowbridge, 71, was found unresponsive in the home by firefighters. He was rushed to Ellis Hospital via Rotterdam EMS, but pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Lt. Thomas Colbert, with the Rotterdam Police Department, says they were alerted to the fire by people in cars driving by who saw flames coming from the back of the house.

Police say the smoke was too heavy to get inside when firefighters arrived on scene. But they were soon able to get in and found Trowbridge unresponsive in the first floor kitchen area and pull him out of the burning home.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
