State Police investigating Greenport man's cause of death


GREENPORT, N.Y. – State Police and Greenport Police are investigating the death of an area resident.

On Tuesday around 9 p.m., a Greenport Police Officer investigated a report of a suspicious person walking in the roadway, obstructing traffic around Joslen Boulevard and Green Acres Road.

The officer found Ronald Wood, 54, in the roadway acting highly agitated.  According to authorities, as the officer approached Wood, he became irrational and combative.

Assistance was contacted and State Troopers arrived to the scene.  While Wood was being restrained, he suddenly became unresponsive.  Police immediately initiated CPR on the man.

Wood was taken to Columbia Memorial Hospital and was pronounced dead at 10:10 p.m.

An autopsy was performed on Wednesday and the cause of death will be determined pending toxicology results.

The State Police is continuing the investigation with the assistance of the Greenport Police Department, Columbia County District Attorney and the Columbia County Coroners office.
