TROY, N.Y. – Troy Police say a student at Troy Middle School arrested and charged for having a pellet pistol on school property, was also overheard allegedly discussing shooting up a school dance.
Police say the unnamed 13-year-old student has been charged with Unlawful Possession of a Weapon on School Grounds, a violation. The charge stems from the knowledge that the student allegedly had a pellet pistol at Troy Middle School on Tuesday.
Police say the student and three others were also overheard talking about "shooting up" the middle school dance, scheduled for Friday night. A school resource officer helped the administration and Troy Police Department launch a full scale investigation.
The other three students involved in the conversation will not be facing criminal charges; however, they will be facing discipline through the school.
All four students were not allowed to attend Friday night's dance, which continued as scheduled. Students attending the dance were greeted by officers from the Troy Police Department before they entered.
Troy Police Captain John Cooney says that at no time was there any concrete evidence that the students were going to go through with the shooting.
Superintendent John Carmello released the following statement on the incident:
"On October 24, 2013, Troy Middle School building administration received an anonymous tip that several students were planning to create a disturbance at Friday's Halloween Dance by bringing pellet guns to the dance. School administrators, together with the Troy Police Department, acted immediately to identify and hold accountable the involved students.
Student safety is a priority in the Troy City School District. The manner in which this incident was addressed highlights the efficiency of our district-wide safety and response system, as well as our seamless coordination with the Troy Police Department.
The dance is going on as planned, with added precautions in place to ensure student safety."
