Woman pleads guilty to driving SUV into crowd of people


ALBANY, N.Y. – A woman has pleaded guilty to 3 counts of Assault in the 1st Degree after driving into a group of people.

District Attorney David Soares says Shanikqua Thomas, 28, of Albany, pleaded guilty to the counts of assault on Thursday.

On August 19, 2013, Thomas was involved in an argument on Elk Street in Albany.  During the argument, Thomas got into the driver's seat of an SUV and drove in reverse toward the group of people.  Six people were struck, three of which had serious physical injuries.

Thomas fled the scene after the incident but was arrested by Albany Police Officers shortly after.

Three victims needed emergency surgery after the incident.

Thomas will be sentenced on December 5 and faces 15-18 years in State Prison plus 5 years of Post Release Supervision.
