CAIRO, N.Y. – Greene County Sheriff's say they arrested a county employee who is accused of stealing gasoline from county-owned fueling stations.
According to authorities, William Holbrook Jr., 26, has been arrested for Grand Larceny 3rd Degree, Possession of Stolen Property 5th Degree, Criminal Impersonation, and Unlawful Possession of Marijuana.
The Sheriff's Office says Holbrook was arrested on October 15 after an investigation into the larceny of gasoline from the Greene County owned fueling stations.
The investigation began after Greene County Officials noticed an unusual amount of gasoline was being obtained by someone with access to the county's gasoline system.
Surveillance was conducted by Sheriff's Investigators which led them to find Holbrook using a county pump to fill his personal vehicle. Holbrook was on duty as a maintenance worker for the county at the time of the theft.
Holbrook was arraigned in the Town of Cairo Court and remanded to Greene County Jail in lieu of $5000 cash bail or $10000 bail bond.
He is expected to be back in court at a later, scheduled date.
Authorities also say the investigation led to the arrest of 31-year-old Matthew Schrull. Schrull admitted to investigators to aiding Holbrook as being a "lookout" while the gasoline was stolen.
Investigators say Schrull was also on duty as a county maintenance worker during the thefts. He has been charged with Conspiracy and will be back in the Town of Cairo Court at a later date.
