STILLWATER, N.Y. – Senator Kathy Marchione (R, C-Halfmoon) will be at Stillwater Town Hall on Wednesday to recognize "Domestic Violence Awareness Month."
Marchione plans to raise public awareness of domestic violence. The Stillwater Police Department is currently showing their support for the cause by collecting 3,700 donated cell phones which will be given to victims of domestic violence.
Marchione stated the police department is helping victims by providing them "a lifeline in the form of a donated cell phone."
The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence states 1 in 4 women will be a victim of domestic violence in her lifetime. In 2006 there were more than 50,000 reported cases of domestic violence in New York State alone. About 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner every year. Females ages 20-24 are at the greatest risk of nonfatal intimate partner violence.
