BERNE, N.Y. -- The boys varsity basketball team at Berne-Knox-Westerlo wanted to know why their coach of 10 years was fired, so they took their questions straight to the school board on Monday night.
Andy Wright, 36, says coaching basketball is his passion. He's had eight players go on to play college ball, had a winning season last year and now has an entire team behind him, as his players came out to support him Monday to find out why he was fired.
Wright says the support of his players means so much, especially since he was only told he would not be coming back to coach this season, and according to him, there was no reason.
"The complaints of a few and the agenda of a board can take you from something that you are passionate about," he says.
Athletic Director Tom Galvin also found Wright's firing unjust and resigned because of the decision. He says Wright was fired without even consulting him.
Both men will continue in their jobs as social studies teachers within the district.
The district says it cannot comment on personnel issues.
