Twenty heifers killed in Schodack dairy barn fire

SCHODACK, N.Y. – Officials at the scene of a dairy barn fire in the Town of Schodack say at least 20 heifers were killed.

Route 150 closed in both directions between Scott Avenue and Western Road in the Town of Schodack due to fire department activity at a barn on Friday.

The Castleton Fire Chief says the fire at a dairy barn located at 1803 Brookview Avenue began at about 12:30 Friday afternoon. Milking cows on the scene were uninjured, but 20 heifers -- female cows younger than 3 years old that have not had a baby -- were killed.

At least 100 firefighters responded to the farm, owned by Schodack Town Justice Paul Peter.

"It has been a lifetime worth of commitment and two generations before me," he said.  "I know what they did to build it up to what it was and it all changed within a couple of hours."

Investigators are still trying to determine what started the fire, but they are not calling it suspicious.
