FORT EDWARD, N.Y. – Hundreds of people are expected at a rally in Fort Edward Friday in protest of closing the General Electric Plant.
Members from the UE Local 332 union will be joined by members of other area labor unions, elected officials and community members at the rally.
GE announced in September that it was closing the capacitor plant and moving operations to Clearwater, Fla. leaving nearly 200 employees out of work.
As required by the national contract between the union and GE, General Electric gave the union one-year notice of its intent to close the plant. If the closure is followed through, the job cuts will take place in September 2014. The union also has one month left in a 60-day process to present alternatives to management.
Friday's rally will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. in front of the plant.
