Meeting held in Albany to address parents' frustrations on Common Core

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Meetings with the Department of Education were canceled last week amid growing frustrations from parents with the Common Core curriculum, but Thursday night a meeting will be held in Albany to address standardized testing - one of the major issues with the new curriculum.

Letters have been sent out by State Legislators to Dept. of Education Commissioner John King telling him that he must keep the dialogue with parents open, and to re-instate the meetings. Yet local lawmakers have been getting their fair share from parents.

State Senator Cecilia Tkaczyk says she's received 240 letters from concerned parents in less than 24 hours.

"There will be some frustration and unless we are able to provide a vehicle for dialogue people are going to continue to be frustrated," the senator said. "So I wrote a letter asking the Commissioner to reconsider his cancelation of the forums."

Tkaczyk says the letter has yet to be answered by King.

She is one of many lawmakers who sent letters and made statements telling king to re-instate meetings with parents who are beyond frustrated with some of the issues they are facing with the Common Core curriculum.

"The assessments that were really troubling to me, that fact that my 6-year-old is taking tests on the computer in gym class, and the stress that goes into the assessment," said one parent Erin Tobin. "The stress is just permeating the schools, the classrooms, the students, and then of course the home and I think that is why you are seeing the parents react even more strongly."

The Department of Education said in a statement Thursday that they're working to finalize venues where constructive dialogue with parents and teachers is possible, but would not say what venues they are looking into.

The special presentation on Thursday will be held at the Delaware Avenue Library in Albany starting at 6:30 p.m. All parents are welcome to attend.
