Man accused of lying about income to collect thousands in Medicaid and Food Stamp benefits

SALEM, N.Y. – The Washington County Sheriff's Office arrested a man for collecting Medicaid and Food Stamp benefits with false information.

According to authorities, Robert Smilansky, 56, was arrested on Tuesday for Grand Larceny in the 3rd Degree and Filing a False Instrument in the 1st Degree.  Both charges are felonies.

The Sheriff's Office says they along with the Department of Social Services, investigated Smilansky. During the investigation they found the man falsely reported his income which resulted in him collecting $5,644.87 in Medicaid and Food Stamp benefits he was not entitled to.

Smilansky was arrested and processed at the Fort Edward Sheriff's Office. He was issued an appearance ticket to be back in court on October 22.
