LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (AP) - The locomotive of the Adirondack Scenic Railroad that operates between Lake Placid and Saranac Lake has been damaged.
David Link, director of volunteers at the railroad, tells the Adirondack Daily Enterprise several wires inside the train's electrical cabinet were pulled out, cut and placed back into the cabinet sometime last week.
The railroad crew discovered something was wrong when the train failed to pass a routine safety inspection before going into service last Wednesday, but it took a few days to discover the source of the problem. No damage was detectable from outside the train.
was a deliberate and calculated effort to render the equipment inoperable, and
more importantly, to disguise it so it wouldn't be immediately obvious to the
operator," officials said.
The Adirondack Scenic
Railroad is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and
conviction of the person or persons involved in the act of sabotage.
Link tells the paper repairs could cost up to $50,000, not including lost revenue, and calls the damage deliberate.
due to the extent of the damage it is likely that we will not be able to
operate out of Lake Placid for the remainder of our season. Total lost revenue
will exceed $45,000," said
Executive Director Bethan Maher.
Federal Railway Administration officials are expected to conduct their own investigation.
