RUPERT, Vt. - Vermont State Police say a Bennington County man died on Sunday as the result of an ATV accident.
Police say the accident happened around 8:40 a.m. Sunday in a wooded area behind 4035 Kent Hollow Road in Rupert when 76-year-old Maurice Thompson, of Manchester, was helping his son remove a hunted deer from the woods. Thompson's ATV had become hung-up on a log and in the process of freeing the ATV, police say the vehicle accelerated suddenly and threw him off.
Thompson landed face down atop a log with the ATV landing on top of his back.
Emergency responders worked together to get Thompson out of the woods and provide medical assistance, however he showed no signs of life despite multiple attempts to save him, and was pronounced dead after the accident.
