ROTTERDAM, N.Y. – A man accused of throwing explosives into another man's home, was sentenced to 15 years in State Prison for each count against him on Thursday
Larry Ahrens, 33, pleaded guilty last month to second degree Arson and Criminal Possession of a Weapon. He will spend 15 years in prison for each count, to be served concurrently.
Prosecutors say Ahrens hired a friend who, with the help of another woman, allegedly threw explosives into a Rotterdam man's home in 2012. Authorities say Ahren was targeting his ex-girlfriend's new lover.
The firebombs caused tens of thousands of dollars' worth of damage to the East Claremont Avenue home.
Two other people were arrested, 33-year-old Michael Chambers and his girlfriend, 31-year-old Amy Brzoza.
Rotterdam police say on four separate occasions the particular home was targeted. The home was first damaged on March 5th, 2012 when a suspect damaged the siding with a screwdriver, causing hundreds of dollars in damage. The second incident occurred a few days later when an explosive device was detonated on the victim's truck while parked at his home, causing more than $11,000 in damage.
Police say the third incident happened on March 17th when an explosive was thrown into the victim's bedroom window while he slept. Finally, on March 25th, an explosive device detonated the roof of the same victim's home after being thrown from a moving car, police say.
Over the course of three weeks after the incidents, 24-hour surveillance units were installed in the High Bridge Area by the NYS Police, Rotterdam PD and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms. On April 22nd,2012, the cameras caught the suspects travelling on East Clermont Avenue and throwing the firebombs.
That night, police arrested all three suspects.
