Murder trial postponed indefinitely while shooting suspect is evaluated

BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. – The trial for a woman accused of killing her boyfriend in 2012 has been postponed for the second time.

Joey Paul, 28, is accused of killing her live-in boyfriend, 28-year-old Matthew Furlani on July 1, 2012.  State Police were called to the scene of the fatal shooting by neighbors around 10:30 a.m. at the couple's Church Street apartment in Schuylerville. When police arrived, Furlani was found dead from a gunshot wound.

According to Saratoga County District Attorney James Murphy, a large caliber rifle was secured at the scene.

An investigation revealed Furlani was unarmed and Paul was uninjured. There was also no allegation of self-defense in the incident.

Paul has been charged with Murder 2nd-degree, Manslaughter 2nd-degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd-degree in connection to the death.  Paul has claimed the shooting was an accident.

Her trial was originally scheduled for August 12, but was postponed to October 28.  However, it is now postponed indefinitely while Paul is being evaluated at the Central New York Psychiatric Center in Marcy.
