Police investigating fatal accident involving coworkers from Edinburgh Highway Department
MAYFIELD, N.Y. – State Police in Mayfield are investigating a fatal motor vehicle and pedestrian accident that occurred on King Road in the Saratoga County town of Edinburg.
According to authorities, around 11 a.m. on Tuesday, the Edinburg Highway Superintendent, 52-year-old Wayne Seelow, was driving a town-owned pickup truck as the Highway Department was working on a paving project along King Road.
Police say Seelow was working on improving the shoulders of the roadway and backed up the truck in reverse along the shoulder of the roadway to use the vehicle's weight to pack the shoulder down.
While in reverse, Seelow felt the pickup truck go over a bump. As he got out to investigate, he found his coworker, 69-year-old Richard Laport, underneath the truck, deceased from having been struck by the vehicle.
Laport was pronounced dead at the scene by the Saratoga County Coroner.
The State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit investigated the accident and say there were no indications of alcohol or drug involvement.
Seelow stated he never saw Laport behind him, he thought Laport was on the other side of the road.
The situation that led Laport to be behind the vehicle as it was backing is under investigation.
