TROY, N.Y. – Troy residents will be able to renew their Basic STAR exemption in person in Troy during the monthly public forum on Wednesday at the Rensselaer County Legislature.
The forum takes place on October 2 at 6 p.m. in the legislative chambers, located on the third floor of the County Office Building, 1600 7th Avenue, downtown Troy.
Representatives from the New York State Tax Department will be on hand at the County Legislature to facilitate the in person registration.
"This is a good opportunity for residents who wish to continue the Basic STAR exemption and register for the exemption in person," said Chairman of the Legislature, Martin Reid.
New legislation requires all homeowners now receiving a Basic STAR exemption to register with the New York State Tax Department in order to receive the exemption in 2014 and beyond. The registration renewal is intended to protect state taxpayers against inappropriate or fraudulent STAR exemptions.
Residents can also renew Basic STAR via the state Tax Department's website, www.tax.ny.gov. The deadline to apply is December 31, 2013.
