ALBANY, N.Y.- The University at Albany welcomed a new president Saturday.
Robert J. Jones was inaugurated as the SUNY College's 19th President at 10am. The ceremony took place in the University's Performing Arts Center where a number of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community and business leaders gathered.
During the formal installation of Jones, he stated "My goal is for UAlbany to become the University of choice for high school juniors and seniors. And not just those thinking about SUNY, but also major research universities across the country and around the world."
He continued to outline his how he would achieve his goal, with a focus of 4 key priorities. First, he would expand degree-granting programs to include areas such as engineering, big data analytics, and allied health sciences. Second, he would increase recruitment of out-of-state and international students. Third, Jones plans to open the University's engagement with the Capital Region and the country by creating partnerships to solve important issues. Finally, he hopes to strengthen the University's financial resources, tripling external funding for cutting-edge research, and doubling the University at Albany Foundation's endowment through gifts from alumni, parents, and friends that support students, faculty, and academic programs.
In honor of President Jones and his wife, Dr. Lynn Hassan Jones, the Board of Directors of The University at Albany Foundation decided to create the "Robert J. Jones and Lynn Hassan Jones Inaugural Scholarship Fund." The goal of the fund is to reach $1 million.
President Jones recently announced that he and his wife would donate $100,000 to the fund.
