TROY, N.Y. - Police in Troy say a female RPI student was accosted by three suspects in the Beman Park section of Troy on Wednesday night.
Police say the woman was walking near Beman Park on Burdett Street when she was approached by three males around 10 p.m. The suspects then demanded that she give them her cell phone, and police say when she refused and attempted to send a text message, the suspects beat her with an object, believed to be a handgun.
Police say the victim sustained head and facial injuries and was treated at Samaritan Hospital in Troy.
The only description police have of the three suspects is one black male, appeared to be approximately 17-years-old.
The incident has one council member saying the violence the city has been experiencing in the North Central and Lansingburgh sections have spread to the RPI campus in Beman Park, and they are questioning the way police are patrolling the streets
Troy Police declined to comment regarding the councilman's statements, and the mayor says the city is doing all they can can to fight crime. He tells NEWS10 ABC that he welcomes the councilman to sit down with him to discuss ideas.
