LATHAM, N.Y. – Sixty soldiers from the New York National Guard will depart from the Capital Region in Blackhawk helicopters Wednesday morning for deployment training in Texas.
The soldiers are members of the 42nd Combat Aviation Brigade based in Watervliet, N.Y. They will be flying ten UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters to Fort Hood, Texas where they will continue training for their deployment to Kuwait in late 2013.
The 42nd Combat Aviation Brigade has units in eleven states. In New York, the Brigade is responsible for aviation elements in Dunkirk, Jamestown, Olean and Rochester; Latham; Brooklyn, Patchogue and Ronkonkoma.
The Brigade was last deployed in May 2004 to Iraq and returned in November 2005 where the unit supported flight operations across four provinces of North Central Iraq.
The departing Brigade soldiers will continue their training in Fort Hood, Texas so that they will be able to provide aviation support for U.S. military forces deployed to Kuwait.
The Blackhawk helicopters will depart from the Army Aviation Support Facility in Latham. The first five helicopters take off at 9 a.m. The second five will depart at 10 a.m.
