Egremont fires long-time police chief

Posted:

EGREMONT, Mass. (AP) - Egremont's three-member board of selectman has voted unanimously to fire the town's embattled police chief.

The board Monday fired Chief Reena Bucknell because she has refused to sign an agreement that would have paved the way for her departure.

Bucknell, Berkshire County's first female police chief who had been on the job for 15 years, has been on paid administrative leave since February following a vote of no confidence by the department's officers.

She did not attend Monday's meeting, but in the past defended her record.

The Berkshire Eagle reports that an independent review identified multiple concerns with the department under Bucknell' s leadership, including high turnover, training issues, antiquated police procedures, and improper follow through on grant application provisions.

Egremont has a population of about 1,000 people.
