ALBANY, N.Y. -  Governor Andrew Cuomo is celebrating the United States Air Force birthday on Wednesday.

It wasn't until after World War II that the United States recognized the U.S. Air Force as a separate and distinct partner in the national's military.

Cuomo stated, "Today we celebrate the birth of the U.S. Air Force and we thank our brave men and women of the New York Air National Guard and their families who sacrifice every day to protect our great nation."

As of their anniversary, over 5,500 uniformed members of the New York Air National Guard and its five wings support the War on Terror and conduct operations at home and throughout the world.
