Greenwich man faces federal child porn charges

Posted: Updated:

ALBANY, N.Y. - A local newspaper editor and former teacher has been locked up as a "danger to the community" after federal prosecutors say he possessed child pornography.

Tim Tefft, 64, of Greenwich, was charged with three counts of possessing child pornography in Federal Court on Monday. He pleaded not guilty and remains in custody after the judge ruled he was dangerous.

Tefft is well-known in Washington County as the editor of The Greenwich Journal-Salem Press. Police say he came to their attention two-and-a-half years ago when he forgot his thumb drive at the Saratoga Casino and Raceway. An employee, trying to locate the owner of the device, plugged the drive into a computer and found images of boys ages 10 to 14-years-old engaged in sexual acts. Police say they connected the thumb drive to Tefft because it also contained many of his stories.

When police went to Tefft, they say he admitted the thumb drive, containing 13 images of male child pornography, was his. He also handed over two additional thumb drives and a computer.

These are not the only allegations Tefft is facing. Former students of his from a school in Connecticut are also now coming forward with allegations of sexual abuse.

He was a teacher in the late 1970s and 1980s at the Brunswick School for Boys in Conn. About six months ago three former students, now middle-aged men, came forward saying Tefft allegdly molested them while they were students.

In an online statement the school said a private investigator looked into the claims, even interviewing Tefft. The statment says, "While Tefft denies the alleged abuse, over the course of hours of questioning he admitted many other details that, in the opinion of the investigators, lend credibility to the alumni's accounts of sexual abuse."

However, no criminal complaints can be made due to a Statute of Limitaions.

The case is being investigated by the FBI.
