Vermont boy, 5, dies in ATV accident


SHAFTSBURY, Vt. - The Vermont State Police say an ATV accident in Shaftsbury killed a 5-year-old boy on Saturday.

Police say the ATV accident occurred at his home on Hidden Valley Road in Shaftsbury around 7 p.m. Saturday. Officials say the 5-year-old boy was riding on trails by his home, when he did not return, his father went out looking for him to find the boy pinned under the ATV.

Troopers responded immediately and assisted in performing CPR until the ambulance arrived. The boy, identified as Benjamin Prouty, was transported by Arlington Rescue to the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.  

Detectives with the Vermont State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to the hospital to initiate an investigation. Upon initial investigation, the incident does not appear suspicious.

No further information is available at this time; pending the results of the autopsy.
