Posted: Updated:

VOORHEESVILLE, N.Y. – The Albany County Sheriff's Office tells NEWS10 ABC that a man fell off a cliff to his death in John Boyd Thacher State Park on Friday morning.

Sheriff Craig Apple says calls for the fatal fall came in just before 8 a.m. Friday. The 42-year-old Rensselaer man was found dead on the Indian Ladder Trail.  Authorities believe he fell while rock climbing in the area because he was found equipped with climbing supplies; a rope, harness, and helmet. Rock climbing is prohibited in the park.

Identification was also found at the scene, along with a vehicle that was parked inside one of the secure parking areas. Apple says it appears that the individual drove around the barrier sometime Friday morning.

Officials have not released the identity of the man at this time pending notification of next of kid.

The Sheriff's Office, New York State Police and the coroner have left the scene.  Earlier, a staging area was been set up by police.

The investigation is ongoing and more information is expected to be released as available. Check back to NEWS10.com for updates.
