BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. – During Wednesday night's storm, a Ballston Spa church's bell tower was damaged by lightning, 20 years after an accidental fire destroyed the church itself. On Thursday, the clean-up began.
Church members along with a response team pulled up soaked carpet and hauled out damaged dry wall. High-powered fans aired out the smoke smell, as the hustle got underway to get Ballston Center A-R-P church back on its feet.
On Wednesday night, lightning struck the church's bell tower, causing flames to shoot into the air.
No one was inside at the time, and that is what church members are calling a miracle.
John Meier, a Church Elder says, "Praise the Lord that nobody was here. It was about a half hour before our prayer meeting started, so there was nobody in the building and when the fire started, no one was injured so we thank God for that."
Clean-up will continue for several days, and the tower will be repaired.
Church Elders tell NEWS10 ABC the upcoming Sunday mass will not be affected by the damage.
