Parents petitioning for change as children walk long distances to school

LANSINGBURG, N.Y. -- Some parents in Lansingburg say that's what their children, some as young as 4-years-old, face a mile walk each day to get to school. Now, a petition is circulating, urging school officials to act.

Superintendent Cynthia DeDominick, says she feels for the parents who are inconvenienced by the bussing system here in Lansingburg, but she has to follow board rules. Any child who lives within a mile and half of their school in this district, with a few exceptions, is not eligible to ride the bus.

Amanda Stalker contacted NEWS10 about bussing in Lansingburg School District. She showed us her petition with over 100 signatures from parents in support of the district revamping its bussing protocol.

Stalker, who has children who go to school in Lansingburg, and parents like Christina Fogarty, mother of 6 children who attend 3 different schools, say kids are walking a potentially dangerous, mile and a half long route to school, many of them alone.
