AMSTERDAM, N.Y. – One man is accused of driving drunk with children in the vehicle and leading police on a vehicle and foot chase.
Amsterdam Police say they saw a vehicle driving aggressively on Market Street on Tuesday. As officers attempted to make a vehicle stop, the operator led the officers of a brief pursuit. During the pursuit, the driver, Clifford Morway II, 25, allegedly struck a curb and drove onto a sidewalk before coming to a stop. That is when, police say, he fled the vehicle and led officers on a foot chase.
As more police officers responded to the scene, two young children were found in the back seat of the vehicle and both front airbags were deployed.
The children were secured by authorities and transported to St. Mary's Hospital. They were then released to their mother. It was confirmed that Morway is the father of the children.
As the foot chase concluded with a brief struggle, Morway was taken into custody. An officer sustained a broken collarbone as a result of the struggle.
Morway has been charged with DWI, Operating a Vehicle with .08 or more BAC, Aggravated DWI with a Child in the Vehicle, Assault in the 2nd Degree, Resisting Arrest, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, plus numerous vehicle and traffic law infractions.
He has been sent to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility on $7,500 cash or $15,000 bond.
