NORTH ADAMS, MASS. - Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) has unveiled its new mascot.
Although MCLA has been known as the Trailblazers, with a mountain logo, since 2002, they have decided to add a mountain lion as the mascot.
The mountain lion mascot was announced Tuesday during a volleyball game after months of planning. Students, alumni, staff and fans took part in deciding on the new logo, as it is a part of Berkshire County's folklore.
The name "Trailblazer" is a reference to the recreational trails in North Adams, and the new reference of a mountain lion is keeping with the tradition, to honor heritage in the region.
Scientists and wildlife officials believe the mountain lion is extinct in the county, but residents stick to their stories, that they have seen the animal roaming around.
The search for the new mascot was mostly done on their website, hosting by the MCLA Mascot Search Committee. Three popular ideas for the mascot were in the final running, but the mountain lion was the clear winner among fans.
