Potentially historic race for Albany mayor ahead

ALBANY, N.Y. – The Democratic primary for Albany mayor will be held Tuesday, and the results will be a historical turn for the city.

Corey Ellis and Kathy Sheehan are vying for the position of Albany mayor. The winner could potentially be either the first African American or the first woman to hold the position.

Ellis and Sheehan are looking to succeed retiring Mayor Jerry Jennings who has held the position for 20 years.

According to a recent YNN/Siena College poll, Sheehan is leading over Ellis 68-20.

Sheehan is viewed favorably by 76 percent of likely primary voters and unfavorably by 12 percent, up from 63-11 percent in July. Ellis has a 58-24 favorability rating among likely primary voters, up from 49-21 percent in July.

The poll surveyed 504 Albany residents between September 3 and 5.

The winner of Tuesday's primary race will go on to face Republican Jesse Calhoun in the November election.
