EAST GREENBUSH, N.Y. -- Pope Francis is calling on Catholics around the world to pray for peace in Syria, and at one East Greenbush Church, dozens are heeding the call.
For the dozens that went to the Church of St. Mary Saturday night, the power of prayer made them feel they can do something about the turmoil in Syria. Some, like Barbara Ditommaso, are even going without food to show support.
"I skipped lunch. I ate some crackers later on and I haven't had dinner," she said.
All of the attendees hope their faith will have a positive impact on the conflict that's far away in distance, but close to their hearts.
"Just being part of this whole prayer service and the community coming together, I feel like I'm doing something," said Mary Martinez of Castleton-on-Hudson.
