PITTSFIELD, Mass. – A Somerville teenager arrested under sexual
assault charges will be back in Central Berkshire District Court Friday for a
The hearing will determine if 17-year-old Galileo Mondol is a
danger to the public.
Mondol was arrested Friday, August 30 after the
alleged assault at Camp Lenox in Otis, Mass. where the City of Somerville had
rented the facility for team-building activities for fall sports teams.
The Somerville High School junior pleaded not guilty
to charges of aggravated rape of a child, two counts of assault with intent to
rape a child, three counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and
three counts of intimidation of a witness Tuesday.
According to the prosecution, Mondol and two other
male teens allegedly entered a cabin occupied by freshman students on Sunday,
August 25 and assaulted three boys who were a part of the Somerville High
School soccer team. Berkshire Assistant District
Attorney Rachel Eramo said two of the victims were able to fight off the assault
while the third victim was assaulted with an object.
Mondol's lawyer, William Korman, said his client just
happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
"According to the victim, my client was telling
the other boys not to do what they were going to do," Korman said.
Mondol is being held at the Berkshire County House of
Correction on $100,000 cash or $1,000,000 bail pending the outcome of today's
Under Massachusetts law, a 17-year-old is considered
an adult and automatically charged as one. The two 16-year-old boys, whose
names were not released because of their age, were to be arraigned in juvenile
court on similar charges.
The investigation is being conducted by Massachusetts
State Police Detectives assigned to the Berkshire District Attorney's Office,
assisted by State Police Detectives assigned to the Middlesex District
Attorney's Office and the Somerville Police Department.
