Dog dies in hot car at NY State Fair; man charged

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - State police have charged a northern New York man with animal cruelty after he left his dog in a hot car for more than four hours while he attended the State Fair, resulting in the dog's death.

Troopers say they were called to a parking lot at the Syracuse fairgrounds shortly after 2 p.m. Monday and found the man standing over a black Labrador retriever that was convulsing and barely breathing. Troopers tried to cool the 2-year-old dog with water and ice, but she succumbed to heat stroke and died.

Police charged 66-year-old Patrick Oneill of Massena with a misdemeanor of animal cruelty and gave him a ticket to appear in Town of Geddes Court on Sept. 16.
