BERNE, N.Y. – An Albany County man was killed while riding his ATV Saturday, and investigators say it was a booby trap that he had set up to protect his marijuana plants that killed him.
Over the weekend, 50-year-old Daniel Ricketts of Berne died in an off road vehicle accident from the trap he had set up around his pot plants, according to Sheriff Craig Apple. He says the man was nearly decapitated, and alcohol is believed to be a factor in the accident.
Photos taken by Albany Sheriff's Office investigators show images of an animal trap that Sheriff Craig Apple says was nestled in between barbed wire that was protecting marijuana plants.
"The problem here is this could have been a hiker someone coming through putting their foot in a trap," says Apple.
Apple says this is the time of the year more calls come in from people who stumble upon plants ready to be harvested, but the traps are a rare technique to keep people away.
In one photo you can barely see the wire protecting the plants.
"It's ridiculous to do that because you're talking about going from a low level charge of possessing marijuana to possible manslaughter.
And according to Apple, someone cutting through the property could quickly turn into a tragedy.
